Saving Your Prescription Drugs Cost

April 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Prescription drugs can cost you big and throw a lot of money in a single night. You cannot afford it, we people are not immune all the time from diseases so sometimes we need the medication for our health issues.

Below I will give you some tips of what you can do to save your money in buying prescription drugs.

1. Get the generic counterpart
The branded name prescription drugs are very expensive and the average cost is above $100, what you can do with generic drugs is amazing, you can get a huge discount just for the same medication from the branded version.

2. Enroll in insurance program
I knew not all people can enroll for healthcare insurance program, although it cost you but it could help you when you need some medication that expensive at once. What you need to know here is that you have to study the profile of insurance company first. Are they reputable? Are they always pay the claim? You can ask for this information to people around you or in the forum like Yahoo answers.

3. Search an online pharmacy
When you get an online pharmacy they can help you with your saving plan. Prescription drugs that sell via online pharmacy are cheaper than in your local pharmacy. The only thing that make online pharmacy not perfect is the shipping time from them to you, although some of online pharmacy give overnight shipping option, it would require additional cost.

4. Using different medication
Example of this situation is like prescription drugs belong to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor class that use to treat depression like Celexa and Prozac. Assume that you have been prescribed with 20mg Celexa, for 90 tabs it will cost you for about $140, but if you switch it to Prozac with same dosage and strength will cost you for only about $95. That’s $45 cut, it’s a big saving!. But you need to consult to your doctor first if you might consider changing the medication.

5. Look for the outside source
By buying your medication from outside the country like Canada or Australia you can save your prescription drugs cost even for branded name drugs. Want bigger saving? You can try the drugs from Asia like in India.

6. Buy in bulk amount
If you buy your medication in bulk amount you will get a cheaper price, saying that if you buy drugs for 90 day supply you will save more than if you buy them for 30 day supply 3 times. Example from an online pharmacy that I saw, 12.5mg Cozaar for 60 Tabs will cost you $60 and for 120 tabs it will cost you $105. Instead of buying 60 tabs 2 times that could cost you $120, you can save $15 by buying 120 tabs at once.

You can also combine that tips together to get extra saving. You can try to switch your medications with lower cost one and seek their generic counterpart (usually start with cheaper branded name prescription then followed by cheaper generic prescription) that way you could double your saving. You can ven more you triple your saving by buying through online pharmacy and saving more again if your online pharmacy is outside the US. The best tip for you depends on your own need and conditions.Hope you are success with your saving in purchasing prescription drugs.
