Split The Drugs and Get The Result!

April 26th, 2008 · No Comments

There is one effective way in saving the cost of prescription drugs, which is cut the drug in half. You can save a lot this way. But wait a second, what I mean here not that you cut the drug and suddenly you’re saving, if you just cut in half and take both of them offcourse you don’t even made any saving, you just tired of cutting, lol..:D In what condition you can split the drug? What benefit will you get? What type of drugs you can cut in half? And how you can split or cut the drug into 2 same pieces? I will try to explain them one by one.

Let say your doctor prescribe you with 20mg Lipitor, we know that lipitor have 4 type of dosage, 10mg;20mg;40mg;80mg. As an example I will use Drugstore.com to compare the situation. For 20mg Lipitor – 90 tabs they priced $335.97 and it’s the same with 90 tabs of 40mg Lipitor. Back to the first sentence, when your doctor prescribe you with 20mg Lipitor, you can just buy the 40mg Lipitor with same amount and the same price, but then you cut them in half and now you supply has doubled! 180 tabs! You have save for 50%, it’s a lot of saving

The problem is not all prescription drugs can be split in half. Most of them because the drugs do not have scored on them (grooved line) and the others is they are not the typical drugs that can be split, like capsule that have powder inside of it. Though we can still identify the type of drugs that can be split, the type of medications are: Cholesterol drugs, Blood pressure drugs, Antidepressants drugs and Valtrex.

Actually for cutting the drugs you can use knives or any other household equipment exactly in the middle of the drug, on the scored. But it wouldn’t be recommended since the possibility of the accuracy you’ll get is too low. The best way is by using pillcutter/pillsplitter, you can buy this tool at your local pharmacy with price ranging from $5-$10.

As a supplement of this article, I will explain why does the price of 90 tabs of Lipitor with different dosage have the same price? It is because the cost of manufacturing the drugs are not a determining factor but the research & development cost are. The cost of manufacturing the drugs with different dosage are relatively same.
