Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors ( SSRIs ) is a class out of many classes of antidepressant medications. Compare to the others like Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors

Classified as a SSRIs isn’t without a reason, prescription drugs belonging to this class have specific action. SSRIs try to maintain serotonin level in the brain as good as possible, first by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin by brain and secondly by increasing the level of the serotonin available. Serotonin itself is a part of neurotransmitter which is a specific chemicals on the brain that affect the condition of someone else mood and behavior, it is why the activities happen in neurotransmitter can be associated to depression.

Effectiveness of SSRIs could be seen between 1 - 4 weeks after taking the prescription. If there isn’t any improvement at all in 3 weeks you should stop the medication and consult to your doctor for further advice, but if your condition experiencing good result you should go on with your medication and see for another 5 weeks. Other thing you should know is even your condition has got better and the symptoms have gone away, you couldn’t stop your medication at least for about 6 months. If you do that, it will cause you the negative side effects and could trigger the symptoms to come again. You can stop your medication but you cannot do it instantly, you have to reduce the dose of the prescription you take little by little over period of time while before you completely stop taking it. For more information you should consult with your doctor.
